Incidental Immersion

ajh.pm is a non-commercial exhibition space in Bielefeld dedicated to time-based visual art and artistic forms of storytelling. Founded in 2020 by Audrey Jane Hörmann, it serves as a platform for both emerging and established contemporary artists. The space seeks to make visible the full range of approaches and techniques used in working with the moving image.  More

ajh.pm is more than a name—it is a trace, an abbreviation, a locus in thought. The initials refer to an individual life, while the project itself maintains an open perspective. After all, the two are intertwined: thoughts, decisions, and artistic gestures are shaped by a life lived one way and not another—yet they remain transferable, connective, and open to other contexts.

In this spirit, the curatorial concept centers on an invitation to direct, self-determined perception. The space is deliberately kept open and accessible: a large storefront window allows passersby to view the video at ajh.pm from outside at any time. From dusk until midnight, the featured work is projected continuously, unfolding an immersive experience shaped by light, movement, and the architectural framing of the display. The sound, however, is not constantly audible; it is activated by a motion sensor and can be heard only when someone approaches the window. To the right of the main window is a small plexiglass box containing folded flyers with additional information about the work on view.

This layered form of presentation invites viewers to take an active role in perception and allows passersby to encounter art unexpectedly, without prior intention or preparation. They may come upon a screening casually, by chance, with no expectation or prior knowledge—and, if they wish, step closer and immerse themselves more deeply in the work and its content. Questions of what may or may not be considered “art” recede, at least for the moment, into the background. What matters is the experience itself: What does the image evoke? What lingers afterward? In this way, ajh.pm opens a space for aesthetic encounter within everyday life—direct, accessible, open. Selected works are also available online for a limited time.

In its content and approach, ajh.pm understands itself as a site for discursive and aesthetic engagement. The works presented often address questions of identity, embodiment, memory, belonging, and transformation—topics that unfold in the dynamic space between individual experience and social structure. ajh.pm represents a non-commercial, reflective curatorial format and, through its ongoing program, contributes to both regional and international art discourse.

Video in Dialogue

The event series Video in Dialogue creates a space where the boundaries between artwork and viewers are brought to the forefront in a special way. Led by Franziska Derksen (M.A.), the format aims to foster a deeper, collective engagement with video art as a medium for reflection and resonance.  More

The video works presented in this context are more than objects of observation; they engage in a dialogical exchange.

In a time shaped by consumption and fast reception, Video in Dialogue invites participants to pause, consciously experience what is presented, and develop diverse interpretations and associations through a shared discussion. This discussion, held after the viewing, is not a guided tour or didactic instruction, but rather an exchange on equal footing. It puts the act of seeing itself into question: How do movements, cuts, voices, and images shape us? What roles do we, as viewers, take on? In this sense, the format becomes a performative practice—one that shows that art is not finished but emerges in the moment of encounter.

Therefore, Video in Dialogue is not just an offering for art enthusiasts, but an experimental model of how art can become tangible in collective reflection beyond institutional mediation claims. The focus on the interplay between perception and interpretation makes this event series a space for thinking and experiencing.
